loss of life

While not matching the blissful highs of their first albums, Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, MGMT are more appropriately disillusioned on their latest effort of baroque alt-pop that oscilates between sprightly, optimistic 80s electro and minor-key introspection.

An earlier single, "Mother Nature," sounds much better in the context of the album.

The record is available now to stream and buy.

musow danse

The all-female West African collective Les Amazones d'Afrique has come to play with this blazing, sensuous, terrific, and exciting album, Musow Danse.

Its joyful, electropop-infused elements are courtesy in part from producer / remixer Jacknife Lee.

Available for purchase here from Real World Records.

capricorn

Perhaps it's the mid-life crisis in me, but Vampire Weekend's "Capricorn" is hitting hard now. + that piano riff.

Their new record, Only God Was Above Us, drops April 5th.

Yann Muller mixes up a cover of one of the most melancholic dance tunes of all time, Desireless's "Voyage, Voyage."

onlookers

My review of the Kimi Takesue's film Onlookers is up here at Film-Forward.

An intriguing, observational-based doc (no voiceovers) of Laos and its people and its tourists.

what now

Vibing on the vibrant new Brittany Howard record, What Now

The awesome "Power to Undo" is so unabashedly Prince, but also her own.

texas hold 'em & 16 carriages

Beyoncé drops 2 surprise country-fried singles Sunday from her forthcoming Renaissance project (Act II).

We'll take 'em.

"Texas Hold 'Em" is a bouncy, old-fashioned "dive bar" dig. And "16 Carriages" is a blazing, much more complex tune with autobiographical (and historical) elements.

the monk and the gun

I enjoyed The Monk and the Gun: a buoyant parable about democracy arriving in Bhutan in the mid-aughts from filmmaker Pawo Choyning Dorji.

My Film-Forward review here.

miley

Loved Miley (with a poofy, mullet-esque hairdo and vintage Bob Mackie frock) at the Grammys.

"Flowers," which had withered away a bit throughout the year from overplay, felt fresh again!

the 2024 dorian awards film nominations!

This was my first year as a GALECA member, and I was so thrilled to be able to vote for the Dorian Awards!

The nominees are out, and they are great, with many outside the bubble of the usual awards fodder.
