new york films: off the beaten track

I'm so honored to have a guest movie post by native New Yorker Michael from the fabulous Cinema Du Meep. I swear to God, has he seen every movie ever made? These are his eclectic New York films from 1960 - 2000. Unlike usual New York movie lists (Woody Allen, Taxi Driver, et al), Michael has selected some overlooked, hard-to-find choices. There are some personal favorites of mine in the mix (Walking and Talking, Last Summer in the Hamptons, Parting Glances, Urbania) but I have so many more to see!

Hello New York movie lovers! Let's take a trip back in time on a magical graffiti covered subway car... But be careful, since this is a New York movie, you just might get mugged! Keep those boomboxes and iphones out of sight and hold unto the strap if you can't get a seat. If someone gropes you or shoots you a dirty look, don't pay them no mind... It's just how it works here. As we get off for our first stop, try not to trip over the mounds of garbage on the floor from the never-ending Sanitation workers strike.. And if it's a bit dark out, well, blackouts just seem to happen every decade or so... The very least there will be light from all the trash cans that are ablaze. On the upside, we have anything you would ever want to see here... And if you are nice enough, we just might let you come back. But if you insist on going to the Olive Garden with your clan for dinner or not support any local businesses, well, we'll just make sure your cab ride to your Times Square Disney hotel will be the scariest experience of your life! Though that might just happen on it's own... And now, on with the show!

Here's a visual list of mostly forgotten, off the beaten track New York movies that I really enjoy which were released between 1960 and 2000. And when I say New York movies, I mean films that take place anywhere on Manhattan but also through the boroughs, islands and upstate.

Some of these films have sadly either fell through the cracks or have just lost steam over time. Either way, a lot of these picture shows would really benefit from some home video or streaming release lovin'. The ones that are available are pretty lucky... And waiting for you to give a look-see...

  1. Another impressive list!!! Wow! I just took a serious stroll down memory lane and wondered how I managed to see so many of these (then I remembered, I never did have much of a life and used to spend HOURS with my cousins browsing the video store for movies). Thanks for a great trip to Nostalgiaville. I might have to put a few of these on my Netflix list for old times sake!

  2. Wow...I feel like I missed out on a ton of great movies! Spike of Bensonhurst is one of my faves, though, for one reason or another.

  5. Fantastic collection of film posters. Myself, I adore "Joe The King". Any hint of it makes me ache deep in the soul.

  6. Hey where's Susan Seidelmans SMITHEREENS? The true look at the downtown story of NYC early 80's with Richard Hell of the Voidoids, a very young Chris Noth plus an appearance by horror vixen Geretta Geretta pre Dario Argento's DEMONS.
